This is an oldie but a goodie! I don't know where I got this from, I must have seen it when I was a kid! But it's great fun for the kids and really illustrates the point well. Here goes:
Bubbles are like prayers; beautiful, multicoloured prayers. When they pop, that's God hearing them.
Ask your child if he can think of a small, everyday prayer like "Please help me find my other shoe before the bus goes!" or "Please keep Mummy's fingers safe whilst she cuts the carrots!".
Tell him to think his prayer really hard and blow carefully into a SMALL bubble blower. His prayer will float up to heaven and pop as God hears.
Then ask him if he can think of a really BIG prayer, like "World peace!" or "Stop the Whaling!".
Go through the same procedure and help him to lift a BIG bubble blower up off the plate of mixture and wave it carefully through the air. His big, ponderous important prayer will form and pop dutifully (practise may make perfect, but we all have more difficulty with the big prayers too, right?) as God hears it.
God hears ALL prayers without fail. You can pray for as much or as little as you want in your prayer and God will give it his full attention. You are NEVER out of God's hearing!
You can buy bubble mixture, or make your own with washing up liquid and water. I have always found that as long as there's enough liquid in the water, it works fine!
You will need a small bubble blower and a big bubble blower. If you don't have a big one, they can be made out of just about anything as long as it's a continuous connection and it can get wet!
